[ɪntə'næʃnl 'kaʊnsl fɔː ȓɪ eksplɔː'reɪʃn ɔf ȓə 'siː, englisch], Abkürzung ICES [aɪsiːiː'es], französisch Conseil International pour l'Exploration de la Mer [kɔ̃'sɛj ɛ̃tɛrnasjɔ'nal pur lɛksplɔra'sjɔ̃ də la 'mɛːr], Abkürzung CIEM [seiə'ɛm], Internationaler Rat für Meeresforschung, gegründet 1902 in Kopenhagen (ständiger Sitz), koordiniert meereskundliche Forschungen der Seeanliegerstaaten Europas besonders zur Vermeidung von Überfischung, zur Entwicklung mariner Aquakultur (Muscheln, Krebse, Fische) und zur Bekämpfung der Meeresverschmutzung. Der ICES ist Beratungsorgan für Konventionen zum Schutz der Nord- und Ostsee gegen Verschmutzung (Konventionen von Helsinki und Oslo) und spricht Empfehlungen für die Festlegung der jährlichen Fangquoten in verschiedenen Fischereigebieten aus. Er unterhält ein regionales ozeanographisches Datenzentrum (RODC). Zu den (1995) 19 Mitgliedstaaten gehört auch Deutschland, vertreten durch die Deutsche Wissenschaftliche Kommission für Meeresforschung.
